Forum for Educators Focuses on Energy Jobs
March 30, 2012 - More than 75 educators, advisors and industry representatives got together today at the Mon Valley Career and Technology Center in Charleroi to discuss how to prepare today’s students for career opportunities in the region’s growing energy industry.
While gas drilling has brought historic economic potential to the region, community leaders agree that preparing local students to fill the jobs that are created must be a priority.
Local schools have taken that task seriously and are developing programs geared toward energy industry jobs that range in education requirements from a high school diploma to a doctorate. Industry representatives told the educators and advisors what students could expect when applying for jobs and what they can do now to prepare.
I’m grateful for all the partners who helped put the event together, including state Reps. Brandon Neuman and Ted Harhai, as well as Sens. Richard Kasunic and John Pippy. The county commissioners of both Washington and Westmoreland counties also pitched in.
Bradley DeiCas, director of the Mon Valley Career and Technology Center, along with some of his students, did a great job hosting the event.
